Location: South Africa » Kwazulu Natal » Natal Midlands » Midlands Meander » Fort NottinghamFort Nottingham is known as the last outpost of the British Empire.  At one stage Fort Nottingham was just that.  Built in 1856 as a Military Outpost to prevent Bushmen raids into the Midlands, there were no farms west of Fort Nottingham and the Drakensberg, so it really was the Last Outpost.  Built by the 45th (The Sherwood Foresters), garrisoned in 1857 by a Sergeant and six troopers of the Cape Mounted Riflemen, then finally by the Natal Mounted Police, it ceased as a military outpost in 1870.  The village was surveyed in 1856 to act as a buffer zone between the Bushmen and the Midlands, so without Fort Nottingham we may not be enjoying the Midlands like we do today...
